From the liner notes, a note on tracks 5-7:
"For some reason, these works [including Violin Sonata K. 378 / 317d] were soon subjected to all kinds of revisions and re-instrumentations. [...] It is not known who was responsible for these sundry arrangements, but most can be attributed to publishers. Thus the version we have recorded, as a clarinet quartet, comes from Trois Quatuors Opus 79. This Opus 79 was published in 1799 by Johann André in Offenbach, and again, we have no knowledge of the circumstances in which the arrangements were done or who did them. Probably both flute quartet and clarinet quartet arrangements arose from the need for flautists and clarinetists to have chamber music in which to participate."
