Annotation

Singer, songwriter Cyrus Gabrysch is a both an ally and a misfit in the recent swell of alternative folk music sweeping the UK. Born to Russian and Polish parents, he was raised in Lancashire, France and the USA. After training as a classical pianist he lived for several years playing piano in New York for the major Ballet and Modern dance companies, after which he moved to London to concentrate on songwriting.

The combination of his melodic, gravel-pitted vocals with the songwriting influences of the likes of Jacques Brel, Blind Willie Johnson, John Martyn, Ray Charles, Howlin' Wolf, and The Pogues - has created a truly idiosyncratic genre of its own, augmented by the ever increasing band of fiddlers, saxophonists, mandolinists and harmonica players who have joined in recent months.

"The songs of Cyrus Gabrysch are playful, full of pathos, autumnal nostalgia, and flickers of joy that alternate with each other.. .. A modern day Celtic spiritual for the dispossessed." Album Review : Rootstime

“When a new band comes along and they sound that good you say "I'm not sure I trust them!" but they really are that good!” - Mark Lamarr: Radio 2
